| "AUTOMATION
AND CROSSBOW CONTROL FOR HOT DIP GALVANIZING LINES" Abstract: Hot dip galvanising
lines are under increasing pressure to increase profitability and deliver products with
tighter tolerances. Automation systems and their associated instrumentation and
actuators play a key role in this drive to achieve best practice. Modern automation
systems permit precise control across the entire range of products and operating
conditions on hot dip coating lines. This is achieved by applying appropriate
control technology to overcome the inherent difficulties in the process and developing
reporting and diagnostic tools to assist operators and engineering staff to manage the
process. The limiting impact of accuracy and relaibility ofactuators and
instrumentation is discussed.
The paper addresses average coating
thickness errors and then reviews transverse coating errors, in particular, crossbow
coating defects. The paper discusses an existing automation system and evaluates
traditional methods ofor controlling crossbow. A novel approach to the problem
involving air knives with dynamically side-shifting lips is presented. mailto:hatchias_info@hatch.ca for a copy of this
