"INTEGRATION
OF COATING MASS CONTROL WITH BATH AND GALVANNEAL FURNACE" Abstract: During
2000 a coating mass control system was commissioned on Columbus Coating Company's hot dip
galvanising line in Columbus, Ohio. This system included a mathematical model to predict
coating mass, together with dynamic coating mass control by adjustment of air knife
pressure and horizontal position. Accurate tuning of the model and controls required
characterisation of the gas wiping jet or "gas knife". The turbulent jet
characteristics were measured directly by a portable, gas jet measurement rig. With this
measured data the model accurately predicts the wiping capability of the gas knife. This
process information is used to tune control systems and determine the suitability of a
particular gas knife for the range of products to be produced. A design for a proposed
Integrated Metal Coating Control System is described, which links the three technologies;
coating mass control, galvanneal control and bath metal control. Interaction between the
bath, gas knife, galvanneal furnace and coating thickness gauge are explained. mailto:hatchias_info@hatch.ca for a copy of this paper
