Abstract: The impact of coil winding problems induced in strip processing is described, along with common causes. Design of a suitable coil winding strategy is discussed, and special attention is given to the development of head-end tension practices. A simulation model is employed to facilitate strategy investigation and suitably defined dimensionless parameters are introduced to yield novel insights into the internal stress distributions of wound coils and the effect of mandrel shrinkage during winding. The effect of thickness profile and poor flatness upon coil winding behaviour are also covered.  mailto:hatchias_info@hatch.ca for a copy of this paper.
