"THEORY OF
HEADS AND TAILS"
Abstract:
The importance of thickness and tension interactions at the ends of tandem mill coils has
been emphasized and some techniques are introduced for their analysis. A number of
representative simulation results provide an indication of the magnitudes involved in
different types of hot and cold rolling operations. Empirical expressions for estimating
the more significant features of the headend thickness responses have been provided.
Practical implications of the results for control system tuning and yield estimation are
described and recommendations are made for monitoring mill threading recordings as a
function of mass rolled, rather than as a function of time.
