Abstract: Mill vibration commonly known as chatter continues to be a major operational concern in hot and cold rolling mills. Careful planning, measurement, analysis and interpretation of mill data and in many cases perseverance have been highlighted as key elements in the identification and solution of vibration problems. This paper provides an overview of the typical data collection requirements and analysis techniques required for rolling mill vibration identification and examples of how these tools are used in practice. The paper also discusses the use of mill vibration monitoring equipment to enable the early detection of chatter and different approaches used to suppress or eliminate chatter.
