| "INTERACTIONS
BETWEEN ROLL SURFACE AND COLD ROLLING PARAMETERS" Abstract: The application of the
aluminium foil rolling theory of Fleck and Johnson, when applied to a variety of thin
steel strip situations, gives excellent agreement with plant observations. One notable
exception occurs in the dry temper rolling of tinplate. The extension of the non-circular
arc rolling theories to include the effect of roll asperity penetration of the strip
surface is shown to significantly reduce the average yield stress and roll force in
situations where the change in thickness is of the same order as the surface roughness.
This mechanism appears to explain several plant observations which contradict classical
rolling theory predictions, including those associated with dry temper
rolling.
