The
last century has seen technology continuously push the design of faster, higher quality
rolling mills to increase productivity and efficiency. However, these speed increases have
often been accompanied by mechanical vibrations, generally referred to as
"chatter", which cause periodic, transverse bands of light and dark appearance
across the strip and in some cases, a matching thickness variation. At present the only
reliable remedy for chatter is to reduce mill speed and increase the frequency of backup
roll changes, resulting in more delays, lower productivity and significantly increased
costs.
Hatch IAS provides a spectrum of
products and services to assist mills with vibration attenuation, including vibration
diagnosis and monitoring products and services and devices for vibration attenuation.
Vidas monitors, analyses and records mechanical vibration on a rolling mill. The system
can provide an early warning system to prevent chatter or rumble conditions on a rolling
mill. It can also provide a continuous vibration logging facility for troubleshooting mill
and roll grinder vibration problems and for correlating with changes in operating
conditions such as roll changes. The Vibration Inhibiting Piston (VIP) is a passive
vibration device which replaces one or more of the existing pistons within the mill and
attenuates third octave mill chatter, increasing mill speed and throughput.
